BOONE, NC
Boone is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwest corner of North Carolina and is the county seat of Watauga County. The city is named after famed explorer, Daniel Boone, who is said to have camped several times within the present town limits. Boone was incorporated in 1872 and has a present year-round population of approximately 14,122. Boone is also home to Appalachian State University, which has a student population of 14,653 and doubles the city's population while classes are in session. Boone's main industries are tourism, agriculture and industry.
Boone's elevation is 3,333 feet above sea level which has a significant effect on it's climate. Though located in North Carolina, the average winter temperature is 35 degrees with an average snowfall of 3 feet, while the average summer temperature is a mild 70 degrees. Pisgah Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway are located nearby providing a beautiful setting and the opportunity for visitors and locals to enjoy an abundance of outdoor activities. In fact, in 2005 Boone was named the ultimate outdoor adventure destination in the Southeast.

Visitors can also enjoy three local parks; Junaluska Park, Boone Jaycee Park, and North Street Park. Four of the best ski resorts in the Southeast are in the immediate vicinity of Boone; Appalachian Ski Mountain, Ski Beech, Sugar Mountain, and Hawksnest Ski Resort. For the fishing enthusiast, beautiful mountain streams are located near Boone and visitors can find 4,200 miles of streams in the area with mountain trout, brown, brook and rainbow trout. The Blue Ridge Parkway also offers several small lakes that contain a variety of fish including trout, bass, and pan fish.
Visitors who have a passion for the arts and theater will find an abundance of options in and near Boone. Appalachian State University's Performing Arts Series and Department of Theater and Dance offer year-round quality entertainment. The university also is home to the Catherine Smith Gallery which is open to the public. The Watauga County Arts Council houses three galleries and the Blue Ridge Community Theater offers fall and spring productions. Daniel Boone and pioneer history buffs won't want to miss a visit to Daniel Boone Ampitheater which offers summer productions of "Horn in the West" recounting the life and struggles of Daniel Boone.
